News from the Ballymascanlon House Hotel

10th Annual Trip by Bishopsgate Golfers.
There wasn’t a kilt in sight when a band of burly Scots celebrated their 10th annual trip to North Louth a few weeks ago! The 18 strong crew from Bishopsgate, on the outskirts of Glasgow, have been making their yearly trip to the Ballymascanlon Hotel on the same April weekend every year since 2000.

We just love everything about this area, the scenery, the hotel here, the food, and of course the people. It’s a weekend we’d never miss,’ said organiser Martin Burke. The group arrived on a Wednesday after sailing from Troon to Larne and making their way across the border.

‘I’ve actually been coming to stay at the Ballymascanlon for the last 12 years, but as a group its our tenth year. Word has spread so much about this area that I have a waiting list at home of guys who want to join!
He added that nothing has deterred these Louth loving golf addicts from their trip, not an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease, nor treacherous ferry crossings from Scotland, not even a stifling recession.
In fact we have two guys on the trip year this year who were supposed to be in Spain, but with flights cancelled due to the volcanic ash, they decided to join us. I told them I think they’d have a better time in Louth!’

The yearly visit is ‘something we save for every month,’ said Martin. ‘Nearly as soon as we got off the boat back home we start putting money into an account for the following year.’ Not content to rest on their laurels during their five day stay, the Scots even entertained the locals by bringing along a number of musicians and a magician.

We have a few guys who play guitar, and another guy who brought his whole karaoke system with him. So wherever we go, we entertain the locals, and have had a few great nights out here,’ added Martin.
Along with their love of the golf course, they ventured out to the Cooley Peninsula, and sampled the bars and restaurants of Carlingford. ‘Its an incredible place, stunning scenery, definitely worth coming back to year after year.’
